For 10 summers, Dive Into Reading has brought local students, volunteer mentors, restaurants, schools, and community partners together around one simple idea: helping children feel confident, supported, and combating the summer slide.
What started inside one Anna Maria Oyster Bar dining room has grown into one of the most meaningful community programs connected to Oysters Rock Hospitality. It is a summer reading program, but it is also much more than that.
It is breakfast before the day begins.

It is a restaurant team opening its doors before regular service to make every student feel welcome.
That is the heart of Dive Into Reading.
How Dive Into Reading Started
Dive Into Reading began in 2017 with John and Amanda Horne, owners of Anna Maria Oyster Bar, as a way to support young readers during summer break.
The first program took place at Anna Maria Oyster Bar Ellenton and welcomed rising third graders from local Title I elementary schools. Students came to the restaurant for a hot breakfast, one on one reading time, and encouragement from volunteer mentors.
The goal was to help fight what educators often call the Summer Slide, the learning loss that can happen when children are away from the classroom during summer break. For young readers, those weeks away from school can make it harder to start the next school year with confidence.
Dive Into Reading was created to help close that gap in a way that felt warm, personal, and encouraging.
Instead of making summer reading feel like another assignment, the program turned it into something students could look forward to. They were welcomed into a restaurant, paired with a mentor, served breakfast, and reminded that their community believed in them.
Why a Restaurant Works
A restaurant might not be the first place people picture when they think of a summer reading program, but for Dive Into Reading, it makes perfect sense.
Restaurants are gathering places. They are where people sit together, share a meal, talk, laugh, and connect. That same feeling is part of what makes this program special.
Students arrive in the morning and are greeted by friendly faces. They sit down for breakfast with their mentors, practice conversation and restaurant etiquette, and then spend time reading together. The setting feels welcoming instead of intimidating.
For some students, reading out loud can feel scary. Sitting across from a kind adult who is there just for them can make that experience feel completely different. The mentor is not there to grade them. They are there to help, encourage, and celebrate progress.

Who Dive Into Reading Serves
Dive Into Reading serves elementary students who benefit from extra reading support during the summer. Many participants come from Title I schools, where additional resources and community support can make a meaningful difference.
Over the years, the program has grown from its original group of students at AMOB Ellenton to reach hundreds of children each summer. Today, Dive Into Reading has reached 17 Title I schools and six locations, with more than 500 children participating and more than 3,000 children mentored over the life of the program.
Those numbers matter, but the real impact happens one table at a time.
One student.
One mentor.
One book.
One morning of encouragement.
That is where confidence starts to grow.
The Mentors Make the Magic
Dive Into Reading would not happen without volunteer reading mentors.
Mentors are the heart of the program. They show up in the morning, sit with students, listen, guide, and cheer them on. Some mentors are retired educators. Some are grandparents. Some are high school students earning volunteer hours. Some are longtime AMOB guests. Some are restaurant team members.
The time commitment may seem small, but the impact is big.
A mentor helps a student slow down, try again, sound out a word, ask a question, or laugh through a tricky sentence. They help make reading feel less frustrating and more possible.
Many mentors will say they get just as much out of the program as the students do. There is something special about watching a child become more comfortable, more willing, and more proud of themselves as the weeks go on.
Host Locations Help Bring the Program to Life
The host locations are another reason Dive Into Reading works.
Each morning, restaurants and community host locations become reading rooms. Teams arrive early. Tables are set. Breakfast is prepared. Students are welcomed in. Mentors are checked in. Books are ready.
It takes planning, people, and a lot of heart.
Anna Maria Oyster Bar locations have been part of the program since the beginning, and community partners have helped the program expand over the years. Other local restaurants and host locations have also joined the effort, making Dive Into Reading accessible to more students and schools.
That is what makes the program feel so rooted in the community. It is happening in familiar local spaces, with local volunteers, local schools, local restaurant teams, and local partners all working together.
A Community Effort from the Start
Dive Into Reading has always been bigger than one restaurant or one organization.
The program has been supported by community partners including the Suncoast Campaign for Grade Level Reading, the School District of Manatee County, Manatee County Libraries, and the Early Learning Coalition of Manatee County, and the School District of Sarasota County.
Those partnerships help connect the program to students, schools, books, mentors, and resources. They also help keep the focus where it belongs: helping children build reading skills, social confidence, and a stronger love of learning.
For Oysters Rock Hospitality, this is what community engagement looks like. It is hands on. It is personal. It is consistent. It is opening doors, serving breakfast, gathering mentors, and showing up for students summer after summer.
